AWAR Rules
- All racers are expected to be examples of good sportsmanship. Racers must treat fellow racers and race staff with courtesy and respect.
- Teams must assist fellow teams in need of medical attention.
- Teammates must remain within 100 feet of each other and within visual contact at all times during the race. There are manned and unmanned checkpoints on the course. Teams must check in together at each checkpoint and TA and will not be checked off at manned checkpoints until all members of the team reach the checkpoints.
- All team members must finish the race in order for a team to be eligible for ranking and prizes. If a member of the team must withdraw from the race for medical reasons the team must check in at a manned CP or TA and the race staff will determine if the remainder of the team will be allowed to finish unofficially.
- Passports must be carried at all times during the race. A lost passport will result in disqualification from the race. Teams must punch passport in correct space at each CP. Incorrect punch or failure to punch, team will not receive credit for that CP.
- Mandatory gear must be carried at all times and will be checked on the course. Teams that do not have the required gear will lose one checkpoint for each piece of missing gear.
- No GPS of any kind are allowed at any time during the race.
- Boats, paddles, and PFD’s must be provided by the racers. They can be rented from Coosa River Adventures. 4-man, 3-man, and 2-man teams must use canoes. Solo racers can use Kayaks. Kayak paddles can be used by all racers.
- PFD’s must be worn at all times while in the boats. Racers not wearing PFD’s will be disqualified.
- Bicycle helmets are required while riding on the bikes. Failure to do so will result in disqualification.
- There are sections of road designated as off-limits. Travel on these roads will result in disqualification.
- Use of cellular phones are for emergencies only. No other use is allowed.
- AWAR will try to provide opportunities for spectators to watch and take pictures of racers while on the course. This is for the enjoyment of families and friends of the racers. Spectators are not allowed to assist the racers while out on the course. This includes giving anything to the racers, taking anything from the racers, giving advice, or giving information on other teams to the racers. Cheating will result in disqualification of the team. Please do not cheat; race staff will be located at all of these locations.
- Obstacles must be completed by all members of the team. If the entire team cannot complete an obstacle the team will not receive credit for the CP.
- CP’s will be worth one point each. CP’s with obstacles will be worth one point and the passport will be punched when the obstacle(s) are completed. The team with the most CP’s will win the race. If there are two or more teams with the same number of points at the end of the race, the team that finished in the shortest time will win the race.
- There are no intermediate time cut-off points during the race. The elite race is designed to be completed in 6-8 hours. All teams must be back to the main TA 8 hours after the start of the race. Teams who do not make the 8 hour cut-off will be disqualified. The sport race is designed to be finished in 2-4 hours. All teams must be back to the main TA 4 hours after the start of the race. Teams who do not make the 4 hour cut-off will be disqualified.
